What is goodbye?
A goodbye means that someone's departing: you say goodbye to your parents when you go off to college, and you also say goodbye to guests when they leave after a visit. The original goodbye, dating from the 1570s, was goodbye, which was a contraction of the farewell phrase "God be with ye!"
Why it is hard to say good-bye?
Sometimes you just have to turn the page and end a chapter. I know that all too well. You have to change your job, lose a friend, the house is too small for so many people. It’s hard, sometimes really hard, but it’s part of life. We close one thing, say goodbye, and then open up another and say hello to all the new things.
You can add chapters to your life, but you need blank pages to keep on writing.
That same old chapter needs an ending, it needs to be closed, but it will still be there. Traces of it will continue on the next page. It will all make sense once you know why you’re closing it. It will all make sense when you let it.
If you learn to deal with that emptiness if you don’t make it bigger than it needs to be if you give it the space it needs…
If you let yourself cry when you need to, and give yourself time to heal, then you’ll be ready for what comes. It’s so hard to say goodbye, but once you do you’ll heal and learn to take care of yourself.
Learning to say goodbye is learning to grow. If you look back you’ll see how much your life changes. Not even you, with all the knowledge you have now, could have predicted exactly where you’d be right now.
You’ve gotten to where you are now because of your decisions. And among your decisions was your decision to say goodbye.
Importance of goodbye
As a result, life can become somewhat crowded with outdated thoughts about ourselves, stuck feelings that we are not sure about the meaning of, and unhelpful behaviors that we wish we did not have.
At the same time this holding on might lead to friendships we sort of keep going with, family relationships that have issues bubbling under the surface that have not been aired, and intimate relationships that are far more difficult than they need to be.
Daring to look, to really examine what is happening and what will help is an important part of moving towards the kind of relating you want and deserve. A therapeutic relationship with a counselor can help you to do this.
In therapy, we aim to create an atmosphere where you are able to talk about anything that is troubling you, however personal or uncomfortable.
Sometimes the work in counseling is to help you say goodbye to thoughts and feelings you have been holding on to, making space for new ways of looking at things and different ways of relating.
Sometimes it is about saying goodbye to old ideas about yourself, solving conflicts inside and letting yourself be free of the past. Sometimes the work is about supporting you through decisions to actually say goodbye to relationships that you have given your all to and can hand on heart say it is time to leave.
Endings are often difficult, sometimes even painful, but they are also new beginnings and they can offer hope and excitement about a potentially different future. If you are feeling stuck with thoughts, feelings or relationships that you would like to move on, perhaps working with a counselor to understand what you would like to have happen and bringing it into being would be a useful next step.
Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting. Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end; it simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.
o long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart, I shall say that life is good. Yesterday brought the beginning, tomorrow brings the end, though somewhere in the middle we became the best of friends. Good friends never say goodbye.
They simply say “See you soon.” Though miles may lie between us, we are never far apart, for friendship doesn’t count miles, it’s measured by the heart.
You and I will meet again, When we’re least expecting it, One day in some far off place, I will recognize your face, you and I will meet again. Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.
