The exotic festival, originated in the Indian state of Kerala is celebrated for 10 days (During the Months ofAugust and September) .
The ten days of Onam are called Atham, Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam,
Uthradom, Thiruvonam. These ten days were named after 10 zodic stars belonging to four zodiac signs namely Libra,Scorpio,Sagittarius and Capricorn.
The people of Kerala brings two mythical stories which paves ground for this celebration.
The first is about a legendary king Mahabali who ruled his land with enormous generosity. So great is his highness that attracted the wrath of the heavenly gods.
As a result they send Lord Vishnu to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali to the netherworld. The Conspiracy ends in favour of King Mahabali as he granted the king's sole wish
i.e. to visit his land and people once every year. To commemorate the visit of Mahabali and to remember the golden rule of, a mythical king Onam is celebrated all over Kerala.
Also, there is another mythical story where the native folk believes in the formation of ancient Kerala by Parasurama.Parasurama is none other than the incarnation of Vishnu.
It is believed that Onam is remembered as the day on which Parasurama created Kerala from the sea-bed.It goes intresting while they say Lord Vishnu Created it by throwing his battle-axe into the waters.
Here are the Onam Festive Rituals.
Flower carpet
People lay a Flower carpet , as it is traditionally called 'Pookalam', in front of each their house to welcome the King. Mounds representing Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in their courtyards.
Snake boat races
Locally known as Vallam Kali literarlly means Boat Game. It is a form of canoe racing, and uses paddled war canoes.
Onappottan
It is a traditional costume mostly seen in northern parts of Kerala. Onappottan visits houses during the onam and gives blessing.
Kaazhchakkula
Offering Plantain It is believed that plantain fruit is a favourite food of Guruvayurappan. The most suitable time to offer plantain is Uthradam, the eve of Onam.
Puli Kali
Puli kalli is an integral part of it Onam Festival celebrated in Kerala State of India. Puli Kali which literally known as leopard dance.The festival celebrates the Vamana avatar of Vishnu and the following repatriation of the legendary Emperor Mahabali.
Sadhya
Other traditional rituals are performed followed by a lavish feast called 'Sadhya'. Sadya is a feast encompassing the length and breadth of vegetarian cuisine. It spread can go up to 28 dishes time.
This traditional vegetarian feast of Kerala is among the most favourite delicacies of all who visit our shores Onam also means new clothes for the whole family, sumptuous home-cooked delicacies on banana leaves rounded off by a cup of sweet Payasam.
